Recently Dr. Tony Neal gave two presentations on methamphetamines at our church—one to our staff and officers and one to parents and students. Having seen first hand the devastating spiritual, emotional and physical affects on his patients, Dr. Neal is passionate about warning our generation against this dangerous drug. The Bible says, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ep. 5:18). Why does God command his people to avoid addictive substances? To ruin our fun? No, it is because he loves us and wants better for us. Earlier in this passage, Paul reminded the Ephesians of who they were: “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God (1).” If you are addicted to anything or are flirting with something that could make you its slave, I beg you to look instead to Christ as the one who truly loves you and wants you to live freely in his image. That looking to Christ may include many practical steps including prayer, worship, help from friends, medical attention and counseling. But please do not hesitate to contact a pastor or elder as well. We do not want you to be alone in your struggle. It is our privilege to shepherd the sheep through any valley. In the meantime, I hope that the following information will serve as a means of grace to all.
